Adding a Harbor

Step 1 - setting up the directory / xml files

  1. copy an existing harbor
  2. rename all the old stuff to whatever your new harbor name is
  3. edit the .xml and _ent.xml files and rename

Step 2 - prepare the .obj

  1. copy it from vship2000/datafiles/harbors into the new harbor directory
  2. edit it with maya somewhere
  3. view->camera attribute editor
    1. set far clip plane to 1000000
  4. f key -> fit
  5. re oriente
    1. select
    2. mesh tab -> right pane
    3. rotate x -> 90
  6. get a texture
    1. go to google maps
    2. find a satellite image of the area
    3. print screen
    4. paste into an image editor
    5. save as mayport.bmp
  7. attach the texture in maya
    1. select the harbor
    2. hold right
      1. material
      2. material attributes
        1. click on grid next to color
          1. click file button
            1. click folder tab in the right pane next to filename
    3. map uv coordinates
      1. select the mesh
      2. hold space
      3. Edit Polygons->Texture->Planar Mapping
        1. Window->UV Texture Editor
        2. If the model is not mapped correctly, redo the Planar Mapping, but this time select the dialog box and select either Y or Z to map to.
  8. hold space ([Mark] Node: You may want to do this before doing the UV mapping)
    1. polygon->cleanup
    2. polygon->reduce until polygons are reasonable
  9. export to obj
